By the efforts of Batumi Sea Port management, an agreement has been reached with Panalpina Company on handling pipes used for the works on implementation of the second stage of the Shah Deniz project. BP is the largest shareholder and the operator of the "Shah Deniz” project and performs the construction of the given export gas pipeline, which will be able to pump over 16 billion cubic meters of gas annually, from which 6 billion will be delivered to Turkey and 10 billion to Europe.
First shipment of steel pipes with a weight of 6 tons each for the Azerbaijan section has already been delivered to Batumi Port. From the upcoming year Batumi Sea Port is waiting to receive shipments of large sized pipes. Due to special cover, the delivered pipes require extremely special treatment; the pipes are discharged from the vessel by means of portal cranes, with the use of traverses and special clamps, then stored on port territory according to all necessary precautions and further stacked on railway trains following the direction to Azerbaijan.
Second stage of « Shah Deniz» gas field exploitation is considered to be one of the largest and most difficult initiatives ever implemented in the world oil and gas industry and due to that fact, the selection of Batumi Sea Port as the point of transshipment of steel pipes for the given project proves the status of BSP as a reliable and stable partner in the sphere of port services of the Black Sea region.
